La Hume in the Roaring Twenties

An isolated and economically impoverished district of Gujan-Mestras, La Hume was nevertheless to see its situation change between the wars. Thanks to the impetus of Frédéric Lestrade, in less than a year he created a seaside resort that attracted more and more people.

The heyday of the Roaring Twenties brought a new dynamism to the resort, and new, previously unknown places of pleasure began to appear. This small, hitherto forgotten district was to become an essential part of the Basin’s pleasures.

The Atlantic Wall

With the Gramasa association, enter the bowels of the 506d blockhouse, located at the entrance to the Parc de la Chêneraie. This relaxing park, steeped in history, is home to a fortress casemate for a 4.7 cm anti-tank gun.
A rich and precious moment to share, as this fully restored blockhouse is unique in France.

The association ” Groupede RecherchesArchéologiquessur le Murde l’AtlantiqueSecteurArcachon” was founded in 2008, and is dedicated to:
-to study and promote the land, coastal and underwater sites of the Arcachon sector of the Atlantic Wall;
-to bring together individuals interested in the Atlantic Wall in this region;
-to act for the safeguard and conservation of movable and immovable remains relating to it;
-to act for the preservation of the underwater fauna and flora of submerged sites;
-to contribute to the advancement of knowledge of the Atlantic Wall, by promoting the training of its members and the dissemination of scientific information to the widest possible audience.

La Hume in the Belle Epoque

The Belle Époque is a period of French history that stretches from the end of the 19th century to the outbreak of the First World War (around 1871 to 1914). The era was marked by economic prosperity, technological advances, and a cultural and artistic boom. It was a period of relative peace and social progress in Europe.

Take a stroll down the aisles and discover La Hume during the Belle Epoque. But what remains of this era, and how did people live in a neighborhood so isolated from the rest of the commune ?

A stopover in Larros

The Port de Larros is much more than just a workplace for oyster farmers; it’s a symbol of Gujan-Mestras’ maritime and oyster-farming heritage. Its picturesque beauty, economic importance and role in preserving local traditions make it a must-see destination for anyone wishing to discover the cultural and natural wealth of the Bay of Arcachon.

Between picturesque huts, shipyards, traditional boats, oyster shells here and there, not forgetting the Barbot, you’ll appreciate all the beauty andauthenticity of the port of Larros with this guided tour of the Maison de l’Huître, an oyster museum.

It’s rumored that there’s an eighth port in Gujan-Mestras, well hidden from view. There’s also a whole part of the town’s history that’s completely forgotten and little-known.

This unusual tour will take us in search of this mysterious port, but also of an orphanage, a stud farm and a castle with a very pompous name.
