A little history ...
Pinasses are traditional boats from the Bay of Arcachon, used for centuries for fishing, oyster farming and transport. Inspired by Basque and Gasconboats, they were originally built from Landes pine and propelled by sail or oar. With their slender, shallow-drafthulls, they were perfectly suited to the shallow waters of the basin.
From the 20th century onwards, engines gradually replaced sails, making pinasses more efficient. Today, although they have lost their utilitarian function, they are still present on the basin, restored and modernized for tourist trips and events. True symbols of the local maritime heritage, they embody thehistory andidentity of the Bay of Arcachon.
