A little history ...

The Bay of Arcachon is an inland sea formed thousands of years ago by the action of winds and tides. In the past, it was surrounded by forests and dunes, and the inhabitants lived mainly from fishing and salt harvesting.

In the XIXᵉ century, the basin became famous for its oyster beds, which still exist today and make its reputation. The town of Arcachon grew with the arrival of the train, attracting the first holidaymakers.

The Dune du Pilat, the highest in Europe, and theÎle aux Oiseaux with its famous Cabanes Tchanquées on stilts were discovered. Today, the basin is a protected natural area, rich in flora and fauna, where you can observe migratory birds, fish, sail and discover a unique heritage.
