A little history ...

Arcachon was once a smallfishing and resin-makingvillage. Its development began in the 19th century, when the Pereire brothers, supported by Napoleon III, created a seaside resort to promote tourism and marine cures.

In 1857, Arcachon became an independent commune and attracted thearistocracy and bourgeoisie, seduced by its mild climate and exceptional natural setting. The Ville d’Hiver, with its elegant villas, was built to welcome wealthy visitors in search offresh air.

Arcachon then developed around fishing,oyster farming and tourism. Today, the town has become a must-see destination on the Atlantic coast.
