An oyster-farming interlude: La Maison de l'Huître

When you think of the Arcachon Basin, you think of oyster farming! It is impossible to miss out on this emblematic know-how without discovering its secrets. The Maison de l’Huître is the place to go to understand the fascinating world of these little treasures of the ocean.

If you want to get the best knowledge about oyster growing, there is nothing like a complete immersion in the heart of this ancestral craft. A visit of the museum immerses you in the history and the farming techniques the Bassin of Arcachon is famous for.

In only one hour, you will discover a fascinating three-stage tour: first, immerse yourself in the world of oysters thanks to the film “La vie de l’huître” (The life of the oyster ), which retraces the oyster’s life cycle from reproduction to marketing. Then follow the guide on a tour of the museum’s different rooms, where you will learn all about the different species, the reproduction, farming techniques, predators, etc…

Finally, complete your exploration on your own with the outdoor trail. A fun and enrichingexperience that will arouse your curiosity and your taste for discovery!

Discovering an oyster-farming port: the port of Larros

Follow the guide to discover one of the most emblematic oyster ports on the Bay of Arcachon: Port de Larros, in Gujan-Mestras. Here, time seems suspended between tradition and authenticity, offering total immersion in the world of oyster farmers.

As you stroll around, you will discover the famous oyster huts, where producers perpetuate a know-how handed down from generation to generation. Take a look at the shipyards, where typical Bassin boats are born and can reborn as true witnesses of the local maritime history.

At the bend of the path, let yourself be surprised by the gentle lapping of the water at high tide or by the “mountain” of oyster shells, relics of the meticulous oyster farmers’work. Not forgetting the famous “Barbot“…

Since this morning, Neptune has been looking for his favorite oyster. Giga7 has indeed disappeared; she went for a walk on land between the ports of Gujan and Larros, but… she hasn’t been seen since! Where could she be hiding? Has she had an unexpected encounter? Or has she been distracted by the wonders of the Bay of Arcachon? A mystery…

Fortunately, Neptune has an idea of the route Gigasse7 might have taken. The way is strewn with riddles which, once solved, will undoubtedly lead to our friend’s whereabouts.

  • How many classes can be accompanied by a guide?

    One guide can accompany up to 2 classes simultaneously (around 60 students) to the Maison de l’Huître and the Port de Larros.

    On the other hand, for the “Sacrée Gigass7” treasure hunt, there is no guide. Several classes can participate at the same time, knowing the activity is  ideally played in teams of 3.

  • From what age are these activities offered?

    Activities at the Maison de l’Huître and the Port de Larros are open to children aged 6 and over.

    The “Sacrée Gigass7” treasure hunt is recommended for 8 or 9 years old pupils and above.

    Visits to the Maison de l’Huître and Port de Larros are adapted by the guides to suit the age of the pupils.

    The treasure hunt offers questions of varying difficulty, so that both young and old can enjoy the experience.

  • At what time of year can you take part in these activities?

    Activities are available throughout the year, by reservation, so participants can discover oyster farming and the local heritage at any time!
