A little history ...
Pinasses are the traditional boats of the Bay of Arcachon, once used for fishing, oyster farming and transport. Inspired by Basque and Gasconboats, they were originally built from Landes pine and propelled by sail or oar. With their slender, shallow hulls, they were perfectly suited to the bay’s configuration.
From the 20th century onwards, engines gradually replaced sails, making pinasses more efficient. Today, although they have lost their utilitarian function, they are still present, restored and modernized for tourist trips and events. True symbols of the local maritime heritage, they embody the history and identity of the Bay of Arcachon.
